Garage door openers come in many different shapes and sizes. There are manual and automatic door openers, as well as chain-, belt- and screw-drive garage door openers. When it comes to brands and manufacturers, however, there are two major players that you can choose from. One manufacturer is the Chamberlain Group, maker of the Liftmaster opener as well as its iPhone/smartphone-compatible app. The other is Overhead Door, maker of the popular Genie series of openers. Which one should you choose?
Chamberlain Garage Door Openers
First, we shall go over the Chamberlain group and its lines of door openers. Located in Illinois, it is currently the largest maker of residential openers. It makes a wide variety of openers that include:
- LiftMaster: The renowned series of professionally installed garage door openers that also have an app that is compatible with smartphones and that enables users to remotely access their garage doors.
- Chamberlain: The more “do-it-yourself” oriented series that has also recently come out with a wifi garage opener.
- Craftsman: Garage door openers sold exclusively at Sears retail locations as part of Sears’ Craftsman line of home and garden tools.
Overhead Garage Door Openers
Overhead Door Corporation is known mostly for their subsidiary, The Genie Company, and their residential and commercial line of garage door openers. Like Chamberlain, they have a range of openers that can be either professionally or DIY installed. Many newer Genie models also include intelligently programmable Intellicode remotes, as well.
Chamberlain vs. Overhead
When it comes to purchasing a new opener, many will argue either which way: Overhead or Chamberlain. Neither brand is inherently better than the other, though. They both include enough variety to fit the needs of any individual household, both can be smart (i.e. technologically advanced) and both can be professional- or layperson-friendly. Thus, it all comes down to familiarity and personal preference.
